Kirkstall Abbey

This is Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds. A favourite place to visit for generations of the cities families. I’ve had many lovely days out here over the years.

A few years ago I was visiting with my young grandchildren. One of them asked why the church was ‘all broken’.

Goodness me, where to start? A man abusing women, politics and power, a country divided on religious grounds.

We made a start on the complicated, cruel and let’s face it sometimes shameful subject of English history, spent a while admiring the architecture and retired for an ice cream. A fun time was had by all.

  1. We love visiting the ruins of abbeys and monasteries around England, especially in Yorkshire. But I guess you can spin their history in different ways; taking back freedom from papal rule from Rome, overthrowing an aristocratic wealthy clergy who kept people in poverty, paving the way for more tolerant societies…..
