About A Curious Narrative

About ‘A Curious Narrative’, it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. I thought it might when I was thinking of titles for this article. I thought that after almost three months of blogging that it was time for me to say a little about myself and this blog.

A few year’s ago I found myself with a little more time on my hands than I was used to. This was in spite of still being fairly busy with work, looking after my two dogs, family commitments and all the other things life throws at us. I definitely did though have more time time.

I knew straight away what it was I wanted to do. I have ever since I was praised by a teacher for a story I had written in the first years of my school life wanted to be a writer. Of course I’ve tried many times to write ‘the novel’ that allegedly everyone has in them. A plethora of notebooks and then later PC’s have come and gone. It never happened and the notes, files and floppy discs all went the same way, into the trash.

Fast forward to a few years ago and I was sure that it was the right time. I even went to a couple of evening classes about creative writing. I opened a twitter account and joined the WordPress community. I guess we are what we are, things went well for a while.

The blog was an eclectic mix of short stories, poetry, real life reflections and photo projects. Eventually though the old excuses crept in. I’m too busy, its all a load of rubbish, etc.

I am unfortunately afflicted with a terrible character trait of worrying about what other people think of me. Particularly people who know me. What if they read it, what what would they think, that sort of thing.

You might be able to guess what happened next. Twitter and my blog went the way of all my previous projects, into the the trash folder.

A few years have passed and the feeling that I want to write has never left me. I have continued writing stories along the way and have masses of ideas for projects, road trips and days out. After some serious over thinking, I might have finally got my head around all of this.

Life is short, fifty years from now it really isn’t going to matter whether I did a blog or not. Now though it does matter, I enjoy it and it relaxes me. By having a blog I am fulfilling a desire I have to sit down and write every day.

I am therefore back with what might be my fifth reincarnation of twitter and a blog. I want it to be what it says in the title.

A curious account of my take on things, with some contemplative thoughts, memories of my life and a selection of stories that spring out of my occasionally over active imagination.

What can you expect to see here. Well I am trying to remain focussed on the writerly theme. There will be a selection of short and longer stories.

As I am learning my trade as it were, there may be an assortment of genres. These may include horror, fantasy, science fi, historical and semi autobiographical.

In the past I have attempted to write poetry. This does represent a steep learning curve for me. I will take the opportunity of having a blog to have another go.

Interspersed through all of this will be images. I have always enjoyed photography but no longer have a camera. For the passed few years I have been trying to take the best photos I can using my phone. I aim to use these on the blog to enhance the words or occasionally for their own benefit.

I aim to make posting straightforward and regular. I will try and post daily or at least on alternate days from the first day of 2019 to the last. This is my first years target. If I’m still here at the end of December then I’ll give some thought to next year. I think this regime will be sustainable yet will require enough effort to keep me motivated. If I am flagging then it will allow me extra days off each week to recharge my writing batteries.

I am of course always open to comments and suggestions for ways to improve my blog or increase readership. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read this. I hope you find something that you enjoy reading in my Curious Narrative.

  1. A blog is certainly a good, low-risk way to get into writing. You can write whatever you like–essays, fiction, poetry, rants, etc. You never know where it will lead you, and it’s a great way to connect with other writers. Good luck!

  2. We all have to start somewhere, the most impôrtant thing is to enjoy what you are doing… Don’t worry about what people will think, there’s no need, we are all lovely people…

      1. Blogging can get complicated and even tedious some days, but try to find the fun in it and all will be well… I had to learn how to communicate with people, and so glad I did!

      2. I have a bit more structure this time than I did in the past which should allow me to enjoy it more. Thanks again for your supportive words.

  3. Your story will be familiar to many; that desire to,write never leaves. When I started my blog in 2002 I felt published. Validated. I’m opposite you in that I never think anyone is reading my blog. Especially not my family or friends. My advice is move past that feeling that people are watching and judging you. How to do that? Acknowledge the thought but don’t dwell on it. Let it go. And if you can afford it, get ad free Word Press😁

  4. A blog is a great thing to have for anyone wanting to start writing as well as anyone who already has books to promote. There are plenty of opportunities to join in with writing challenges, too, in order to further improve your skills. I’ve neglected my blog for a few months now, due to other commitments, but I do miss it and hope to back more regularly soon. The flash fiction challenges are really good! 😀

    1. Thank you, I do enjoy flash fiction. I will have a look for some of the challenges. They sound fun and would be a good incentive to write.

  5. As I get on in years, more and more I am of the view that it is about the journey and not the destination. Hence, if writing is what seems like the right thing at this time, then that it is. I find some similarities in my induction into blogging, which also happened at a time about eight years back when I had more time o hand that I had been used to. I rediscovered my love for writing and have even managed to publish two books since then. All the best for your writing efforts.
