I walk into the room a little gingerly, my Beth is the only person I know. There are so many strangers, I don’t like crowds. She is happy though, the life and soul of the party.
I must try to get to know her friends. Slowly over the course of the next few minutes I work my way around the room introducing myself to one after the other.
Hugging, kissing, touching these modern ways make me cringe. It bothers me when people are over friendly. When I choose, I will show them affection and not before. Some talk to me and some even seem to like me. Others well they’re horrible with their opinions and attitudes. I just don’t know what she sees in them.
Then Beth sees me wandering around on my own and rushes over. She throws her arms around me and showers me in kisses. I think she might have been drinking.
“Everybody” she calls to the assembled group, “I want to introduce you all to my best friend in the whole wide world. My soul mate and I love him so much. Everyone this is Tom.”
I feel a fool my credibility is in tatters.
“Tom say Hi to all my friends,” This really is all too much. What can I say? It isn’t a good look, not a good look at all.
A fully grown mean and moody ginger cat being passed around a noisy party like a child’s rag doll. Oh well! All that matters I suppose, is that it’s my best friends party and she is as happy as can be.
